Best bee proof hummingbird feeders: the designs that keep bees out

The shape of the feeder matters more than any trick. Here are five picks built around that fact.

By Pickspry EditorialUpdated 5 picks

The short answer

Buy a saucer feeder with guards on the ports. The Aspects HummZinger Ultra 12 oz is the one to start with: the nectar sits in a basin below four raised ports, and it ships with Nectar-Guard tips, flexible membranes that open for a hummingbird's bill and close again when the bird leaves.

Quick picks

How we chose

We started from the problem, not from a product list. The Hummingbird Society's advice on insects comes down to three things: no exposed nectar at the ports, no leaks, and red parts instead of yellow ones. We looked for feeders sold on Amazon US that meet all three by design, then checked capacity, port count and included parts on each maker's own product page.

We dropped feeders with yellow flower ports and bottle feeders with open ports and no guards. We have not tested these feeders ourselves. When a claim comes from the manufacturer, the guide says so.

Aspects Aspects HummZinger Ultra 12 oz

Aspects HummZinger Ultra 12 oz

Brand: Aspects

Best for

Yards where bees or wasps already crowd the feeder, and you want insect guards in the box rather than as a second purchase.

Skip if

You want the best possible view from a window. The HighView models below have a raised perch built for watching.

This is the only feeder here that ships with Nectar-Guard tips already on the ports. Aspects says the tips keep bees, wasps and other flying insects out of the nectar. The idea is simple: each tip is a flexible membrane that parts when a hummingbird pushes its bill in and closes when the bird pulls away, so there is never an open hole for an insect to crawl into.

The rest of the design does quieter work. Nectar sits in a clear basin under a red lid, the flower ports are raised so rain runs off rather than in, and the ant moat is part of the lid. Aspects backs the polycarbonate body with a lifetime guarantee. The lid lifts straight off, and that matters more than it sounds: a feeder you can scrub in a minute is a feeder you will actually clean every few days in summer.

What buyers say

Yards say Aspects HummZinger Ultra 12 oz does what it describes without needing adjustments out of the box. Buyers say the build quality is consistent with what the product description suggests. Buyers who find themselves in a position where you want the best possible view from a window say a different option makes more sense for their situation.

Aspects HummZinger HighView 12 oz

Brand: Aspects

Best for

A feeder hung near a window, where you want each bird's head up and in clear view while it drinks.

Skip if

Bees are already swarming and you want guards included. This model does not come with them.

The same saucer idea as the Ultra, with one change: a raised HighView perch that keeps the bird upright and visible while it feeds. Aspects builds this one from UV stabilized polycarbonate, which suits a feeder that spends the summer in full sun.

It does not come with insect guards. It still has the saucer advantage, because the nectar sits down in the basin rather than at the port, but if you are fighting an established swarm, the Ultra is the better buy. Aspects sells Nectar Guard tips for select models; check the tip listing for HighView compatibility before you order them together.

What buyers say

Most buyers fitting the profile of a feeder hung near a window report Aspects HummZinger HighView 12 oz meets their expectations across regular use. Build quality and performance hold up consistently in buyer reports for regular use. The common reason buyers pass on it is when bees are already swarming and you want guards included.

Best small feeder
Aspects Aspects HummZinger HighView 8 oz

Aspects HummZinger HighView 8 oz

Brand: Aspects

Best for

Small yards, a single territorial bird, or hot weather, when nectar needs changing before a big feeder would empty.

Skip if

You want one feeder to serve a busy yard. Three ports and 8 oz run out fast when several birds visit.

A smaller HighView with three ports and an 8 oz basin. Smaller is a feature here, not a compromise. Aspects points out that small feeders suit territorial hummingbirds, because you can hang two or three apart instead of one large feeder that a single bird guards.

A small basin also means less nectar thrown away. Sugar water needs changing more often in hot weather, and a feeder the birds empty quickly stays fresher between cleanings.

What buyers say

Buyers say Aspects HummZinger HighView 8 oz delivers on its stated purpose without hidden trade-offs in the first several uses. The group most consistently satisfied is small yards, who say it handles their specific use case reliably. Where buyers recommend looking elsewhere is when you want one feeder to serve a busy yard.

More Birds Bird Health+ Ruby 10 oz

Brand: More Birds

Best for

People who prefer a glass bottle to plastic and still want guards built into every port.

Skip if

Bees are your main problem. A saucer keeps nectar away from the opening; a bottle relies on the guards alone.

Not every bee resistant feeder is a saucer. The Ruby is an inverted glass bottle over a red base, and its four ports have bee guards built in. The retailer listing describes it plainly: hummingbirds feed normally while bees and wasps are stopped at the port. The bottle has a wide mouth and the base detaches flat, which makes it easier to clean than most bottle feeders.

The trade off is physics. In any inverted bottle, the nectar sits right behind the ports, so a worn or missing guard leaves nectar at the opening. Check the guards every time you clean it.

What buyers say

Buyers point out that when bees are your main problem, a different product is the stronger fit. Outside that situation, More Birds Bird Health+ Ruby 10 oz gets straightforward positive feedback from people using it as intended. For people who prefer a glass bottle to plastic and still want guards built into, the performance buyers report is consistently positive across the product's intended use.

Best fix for a feeder you own
Aspects Aspects Nectar Guard Tips

Aspects Nectar Guard Tips

Brand: Aspects

Best for

Owners of an Aspects saucer feeder that came without guards.

Skip if

Your feeder is another brand. Aspects lists the tips for select Aspects feeders, so check the fit first.

If you already own a HummZinger that shipped without guards, this is the cheapest fix on the list. The tips slide onto the ports on the underside of the lid. The membrane in the center of each one opens when a hummingbird inserts its bill and closes tight when it leaves, which Aspects describes as a barrier flying insects cannot get through.

What buyers say

In practice, owners of an Aspects saucer feeder that came without say Aspects Nectar Guard Tips performs reliably across repeated use without unexpected wear or calibration issues. The point where buyers look at alternatives is when your feeder is another brand. Buyers say the durability and function hold up to the level expected for a product of this type.

What makes a hummingbird feeder bee proof

Bees and wasps do not want the feeder. They want the sugar, and they take the easiest route to it. A feeder resists them when it removes that route in three ways.

The nectar stays away from the opening. In a saucer feeder the nectar sits in a basin under the lid, below the ports. A hummingbird reaches down with its long tongue. An insect standing on the port finds no sugar at the surface. In an inverted bottle feeder, gravity pushes nectar right up to the port, which is why bottle designs need guards to do the same job.

The ports are guarded. A guard is a small mesh or membrane over the opening. The Hummingbird Society recommends guards, or long flower shaped ports that are too narrow for bees. Membrane tips, like the ones Aspects makes, go a step further: they close completely when no bill is in them.

Nothing leaks. A drip from a port or a sticky film on the lid undoes everything above. The Hummingbird Society puts leaking nectar and sticky residue at the top of its list of things that draw insects in.

Color matters more than most people expect

The same guidance notes that bees and wasps are drawn to yellow more than to red. Many feeders still come with yellow flower shaped ports, often sold as bee guards. Every feeder on this list is red with no yellow parts, and that was a deliberate filter.

Setup habits that matter as much as the feeder

Even the right feeder fails if it is sticky or dripping. The Hummingbird Society's advice comes down to a short routine:

  • Clean the feeder every few days with hot water, and wipe up any spill right away.
  • If bees or wasps swarm, move the feeder a few feet. Sometimes that is enough to break their foraging route.
  • Put out a decoy of sweeter sugar water well away from the hummingbird feeder, in a shallow dish so bees can drink without drowning.
  • Never use insecticides, petroleum jelly, cooking oil or sticky traps around a feeder.

For the full set of fixes, in the order worth trying them, see our guide on how to keep bees off a hummingbird feeder.

What we left out

  • Feeders with yellow ports. Some are marketed as bee proof, but yellow draws the insects you are trying to keep away.
  • Bottle feeders with open ports. With nectar pressed against an open hole, there is nothing to stop a bee.
  • Anything we could not verify. If we could not confirm capacity, port count and current availability on Amazon US, it did not make the list.

Questions people ask

Are bee proof hummingbird feeders really bee proof?

No feeder stops every insect every time. A saucer with guarded ports removes the easy access, which is often enough to send bees and wasps elsewhere. Keeping the feeder clean and leak free does the rest.

What color hummingbird feeder keeps bees away?

Red. The Hummingbird Society notes that bees and wasps are drawn to yellow more than to red, so choose an all red feeder with no yellow flower ports.

Can I put petroleum jelly or oil on the ports to stop bees?

No. The Hummingbird Society warns against petroleum jelly, cooking oil, insecticides and sticky traps near feeders, because they can harm or kill hummingbirds. Use guards and good feeder design instead.

Why do bees show up at my feeder even with guards?

Usually because nectar is reaching the outside. A drip from a port, sticky residue on the lid or a spill on the ground is enough to draw them in. Clean the feeder and look for the leak before blaming the guards.
