Garlic Presses

Rocking and hinged garlic presses that mince garlic without peeling the clove first.

A garlic press crushes a garlic clove through small holes to produce minced garlic without requiring hand peeling or knife work. Most hinged garlic presses hold the unpeeled clove in a basket and push it through the holes when squeezed; the skin stays in the basket. A rocking garlic mincer rolls back and forth over a clove on a cutting board and requires the clove to be peeled first. A garlic press produces a sharper, more pungent garlic flavor than knife-minced garlic because crushing breaks more cell walls and releases more allicin. Stainless steel presses outlast zinc alloy and plastic models. This section covers garlic presses by mechanism, materials, basket size and whether cleaning requires a brush or comes apart for dishwasher washing.
