Baby Gates

Pressure-mounted and hardware-mounted gates for stairs, doorways and wide openings.

Baby gate installation type determines where each gate can be safely used. Pressure-mounted gates are appropriate for doorways and room dividers where a fall-through failure results in the child staying on a flat surface. Hardware-mounted gates screw into the wall stud and are required at the top of stairs, where a pressure mount failure could result in a fall. A gate opening width must match the actual doorway dimension; an extendable gate that does not fully extend to fill the opening creates a gap a toddler can squeeze through. This section covers baby gates by mounting type, opening width and child age range.

Baby gate for stairs mounting type (hardware mount required for top of stairs, pressure mount for bottom only), gate height (30 to 36 inches), swing direction (toward or away from stairs), whether the gate auto-closes and latches, the frame width range without extensions and the wall cup system for mounting into door frame molding without exposed drywall determine which stair gates install safely at the top and bottom of a staircase.

Best baby gate for top of stairs: rated hardware mounts 2026

Baby gates for the top of stairs must hardware mount with wall anchor screws on both sides of the opening, must swing toward the stairs and auto-latch closed, must use a rigid frame that cannot flex under a child's body weight and must pass the juvenile product safety standard ASTM F1004. Gate height (32 to 36 inches), the included wall cup system for molding mounting, swing direction control and latch complexity determine which top-of-stairs gates install correctly and remain secure.
