Best baby gate for stairs: hardware mount picks on Amazon 2026

Baby gate for stairs mounting type (hardware mount required for top of stairs, pressure mount for bottom only), gate height (30 to 36 inches), swing direction (toward or away from stairs), whether the gate auto-closes and latches, the frame width range without extensions and the wall cup system for mounting into door frame molding without exposed drywall determine which stair gates install safely at the top and bottom of a staircase.

The short answer

KidCo Gateway Hardware Mounted Baby Gate at $65 is the best baby gate for the top of stairs: the hardware mount anchors to the wall framing on both sides of the staircase opening, the gate swings toward the stairs and auto-latches so it cannot be left open, and the walk-through door requires a two-step latch release that children cannot open.

Best stair gate for bottom of stairs
Regalo Regalo Easy Step Extra Tall Baby Gate

Regalo Easy Step Extra Tall Baby Gate

Brand: Regalo

Best for

Parents who want a taller-than-standard pressure gate for the bottom of the stairs, where Regalo Easy Step Extra Tall uses a 36-inch height that is six inches taller than the standard 30-inch model, making it harder for taller toddlers to climb over while still using a pressure mount appropriate for the bottom of stairs.

Skip if

Installation at the top of the stairs is required. Regalo Easy Step Extra Tall is pressure mounted and is not rated for top-of-stairs use. At the top of stairs, the gate must be hardware mounted to prevent shifting under a child's weight. Use a hardware-mounted gate (KidCo Gateway, Cardinal Gates) at the top of any staircase.

Regalo Easy Step Extra Tall uses the same tension-rod pressure mount as the standard Easy Step but stands six inches taller. The one-hand latch releases by pressing a button and lifting simultaneously. Extensions included in the box expand from 29 to 38.5 inches. The 36-inch height deters children who can climb over standard 30-inch gates.

Regalo is a US baby safety product brand established in 1994, producing pressure and hardware mounted safety gates.

At $40, Regalo Easy Step Extra Tall is the best value 36-inch pressure gate for the bottom of stairs in this guide.

Summer Infant Summer Infant Multi-Use Baby Gate

Summer Infant Multi-Use Baby Gate

Brand: Summer Infant

Best for

Parents who want one gate that hardware mounts at either the top or bottom of stairs, where Summer Infant Multi-Use includes wall cup hardware for both top and bottom installation and spans openings from 28 to 48 inches with included extensions to cover wider staircase openings without buying an additional gate.

Skip if

Only the bottom of stairs needs a gate. Summer Infant Multi-Use at $55 costs more than the Regalo Easy Step at $30 for bottom-of-stairs use. The Multi-Use gate is worth the premium when both a top and bottom stair gate are needed and the parent wants to buy a single system with consistent appearance.

Summer Infant Multi-Use includes hardware and pressure mount feet in the same box, allowing installation at the top of stairs (hardware required) or bottom (pressure optional). The 32-inch height and steel frame provide a sturdy barrier. Extensions bolt onto either side of the frame. The auto-close door returns to the latched position after passing through.

Best hardware gate for top of stairs
KidCo KidCo Gateway Baby Gate

KidCo Gateway Baby Gate

Brand: KidCo

Best for

Parents who need a gate specifically rated and designed for the top of stairs, where KidCo Gateway uses wall anchor hardware with included wall cups for mounting into molding without exposing drywall, and the gate swings toward the stairs and auto-latches so it cannot be left open at the top of a staircase.

Skip if

The staircase opening is wider than 42.5 inches without an extension. KidCo Gateway covers openings from 26.5 to 42.5 inches with included hardware. For wider staircase openings, Cardinal Gates staircase gate with additional extensions spans larger openings.

KidCo Gateway uses wall cup hardware that mounts into the door frame molding using short screws that do not penetrate through to the stud. The gate swings toward the staircase and auto-latches closed on each pass. The two-step latch release requires pressing and lifting that children under two years old cannot coordinate. The 34.5-inch height is four inches taller than standard gates.

Best premium wide stair gate
Cardinal Gates Cardinal Gates Stairway Special Safety Gate

Cardinal Gates Stairway Special Safety Gate

Brand: Cardinal Gates

Best for

Parents with angled banisters or round posts at the top of the staircase where a standard wall cup cannot attach flush, where Cardinal Gates includes an angled banister and round post adapter kit that mounts the hardware anchors to non-flat surfaces at the staircase opening without additional hardware purchases.

Skip if

The staircase has flat wood framing on both sides where standard wall cups attach. Cardinal Gates at $90 costs significantly more than KidCo Gateway at $65 for the same function in a standard flat-wall staircase. The premium is worth paying only when the banister adapter kit is actually needed for a round or angled post.

Cardinal Gates Stairway Special includes adapters for angled banister posts and round newel posts that standard flat wall cups cannot grip. The hardware anchor attaches to the adapter, which clamps to the post without screws into the post itself. The gate swings toward the stairs and auto-closes. The latch requires pressing a button while lifting the handle.

Questions people ask

Why can't a pressure gate be used at the top of stairs?

A pressure-mounted gate holds in place by tension rods pressing outward against the door frame sides. If a child falls toward the gate or pushes against the spindles, the outward force can cause the gate to pop free from the frame and fall down the stairs with the child. Hardware-mounted gates use wall screws on both sides of the opening that prevent any outward movement regardless of the force applied. The American Academy of Pediatrics and all major baby gate manufacturers rate pressure mounts for use only in doorways and hallways, not at the top of any staircase. Every major manufacturer marks their hardware-mounted gates as stair-top rated and their pressure-mounted gates with a warning not to use them at the top of stairs.

Should a stair gate swing toward or away from stairs?

A gate at the top of stairs should swing toward the staircase (away from the landing) so that a child pushing on the gate pushes it closed and latched rather than open toward the stairs. A gate that swings away from the stairs would open toward the staircase if the latch failed, allowing the child to step directly onto the top stair. Most gates designed for top-of-stairs installation are engineered to swing toward the stairs only and auto-latch in that direction. A gate at the bottom of stairs can swing in either direction since the risk of falling down the stairs is lower at the bottom.

Do I need a gate at both the top and bottom of stairs?

A gate at the top of stairs prevents a child from falling down the staircase and is the higher priority of the two. A gate at the bottom of stairs prevents a child from climbing up unsupervised and is recommended when the top-of-stairs gate is the only barrier. If the upstairs area is not accessible to the child or there are no hazards upstairs, some parents use only a bottom gate. Most pediatric safety guidelines recommend gates at both the top and the bottom of every staircase that a child can reach until the child can consistently use the stairs safely without assistance.
