Questions people ask

Is borosilicate glass safer than regular glass for a French press?

Borosilicate glass is more suitable than regular soda-lime glass for a French press because of its thermal shock resistance. When hot water (195F to 205F) is poured into a cold glass carafe, the rapid temperature change creates thermal stress. Regular soda-lime glass is more likely to crack from this thermal shock than borosilicate glass, which expands and contracts less when heated (a lower coefficient of thermal expansion). All Bodum French presses use borosilicate glass: the Brazil, Chambord and all other Bodum carafe models. Espro and Yield Design also use borosilicate. To minimize thermal shock risk with any glass French press, preheat the carafe by filling it with hot water for 30 seconds before adding coffee grounds. The main risk with borosilicate remains mechanical impact: it still breaks if dropped.

How do I replace a broken French press glass?

French press replacement carafes are available for most major brands. Bodum sells replacement borosilicate glass carafes for the Chambord, Brazil and other models, and the carafe sizes are model-specific. A Chambord 8-cup replacement carafe fits the Chambord frame but not other brand frames. When searching for a replacement: measure the outer diameter and height of the broken carafe, or check the brand and model name printed on the frame. Bodum replacement carafes are available on Amazon and at most kitchen retail stores. The replacement carafe typically costs $8 to $15 (less than a new French press complete). Espro and Yield Design sell replacement glass for their models as well. For brands where replacement glass is unavailable, the entire press must be replaced.

What is the best way to pour from a glass French press without sediment?

To minimize sediment when pouring from a glass French press: after pressing the plunger, pour immediately rather than letting the coffee rest (additional resting allows fine particles to rise back through the filter). Pour at a controlled angle, stopping just before the last half-inch of liquid in the carafe: the finest particles settle at the bottom and the last pour is the most sediment-heavy. Use a coarse grind (sea-salt texture): fine grinds pass through even good mesh filters and produce a cloudier cup. The Espro P3's double micro-filter traps finer particles than standard Bodum mesh, producing a noticeably cleaner pour. If sediment is a significant concern, a paper filter insert (available for standard French press sizes) adds another layer of filtration, though it also absorbs some of the oils that give French press coffee its characteristic body.
