Questions people ask

What weight capacity do I need in a camping chair?

Choose a camping chair with a weight rating at least 50 pounds above your body weight to provide a safety margin at the frame joints and fabric attachment points. Standard camping chairs rated at 225 to 275 pounds are adequate for adults up to 200 pounds. Heavy duty chairs rated at 300 to 350 pounds cover adults up to 275 pounds. Oversized heavy duty chairs rated at 400 to 500 pounds cover very large adults and provide extra margin for the forces of sitting down heavily, which momentarily exceeds static body weight. Camping chairs that are used at or above their rated capacity wear out frame joints and fabric attachment points faster than chairs used well within their rating.

What are heavy duty camping chairs made of?

Heavy duty camping chairs use steel or reinforced aluminum frames and thick polyester or nylon fabric. Steel frames are heavier than aluminum but stiffer under load, which some buyers prefer for the solid feel when sitting. Aluminum frames in heavy duty ratings require larger diameter poles or more material at the joints to achieve the same load rating as steel, which is why aluminum heavy duty chairs are often more expensive than steel ones of the same rating. The fabric in heavy duty camping chairs is a higher-denier polyester or nylon than standard camping chair fabric, which adds tear resistance at the fabric-to-frame attachment points where fabric failures occur on chairs loaded beyond their rating.

Are heavy duty camping chairs worth it?

Heavy duty camping chairs are worth buying for adults who are at or near the upper weight limit of standard chairs. Using a standard camping chair rated at 250 pounds for an occupant at 230 pounds creates a situation where any additional dynamic loading from sitting down with impact, shifting weight or standing up quickly can momentarily exceed the rating. Over many uses, this stresses the joints and shortens the chair's lifespan. Heavy duty chairs at 350 to 450 pounds cost $10 to $30 more than standard chairs at the same price tier but eliminate the concern about approaching the capacity limit, which provides both physical safety and a longer chair lifespan under regular use.
