Questions people ask

Why choose stainless steel over plastic for a cat water fountain?

Stainless steel cat water fountains provide two main advantages over plastic: bacterial resistance and longevity. Plastic water fountains develop microscopic scratches on the surface after weeks of use. Bacteria colonize those scratches and form a biofilm (slime) that builds up over time and can develop into feline acne or chin acne in cats, which is a skin condition caused by contact with contaminated plastic surfaces. Stainless steel does not scratch easily and does not harbor bacteria in the same way. Stainless steel also does not absorb flavors or odors from the water the way plastic can after months of use. The main tradeoff is cost: stainless steel fountains typically cost $10 to $20 more than comparable plastic models.

Are stainless steel cat water fountains dishwasher-safe?

Most stainless steel cat water fountain bowls and reservoirs are dishwasher-safe on the top rack. The pump, which is always plastic with a rubber impeller, is not dishwasher-safe and should be cleaned by hand with warm water and a small brush. The pump housing should not be submerged in soap for extended periods: rinse the pump under warm water and clear the impeller manually. For the steel components, dishwasher cleaning at full cycle provides thorough cleaning and sanitization that hand-washing may not fully achieve. Check the specific model's instructions: some stainless steel fountain components are rated for top rack only, not the bottom rack where temperatures are higher.

How do you remove calcium deposits from a stainless steel cat fountain?

Calcium deposits (white mineral scale from hard tap water) on stainless steel cat fountains are removed with white vinegar. Soak the stainless components in a 1-to-1 solution of white vinegar and water for 1 to 2 hours, then scrub with a soft brush or sponge. The acetic acid in white vinegar dissolves calcium carbonate scale without damaging stainless steel. Rinse thoroughly after soaking: vinegar smell deters cats, so complete rinsing is important. For regular maintenance to prevent heavy scale buildup, wipe stainless surfaces weekly with a vinegar-dampened cloth during the cleaning cycle.
