Best finch feeders: tube and mesh designs that hold nyjer and thistle seed

Finches are small and acrobatic. A feeder that makes them work for the seed keeps sparrows and starlings off it.

By Pickspry EditorialUpdated 4 picks

The short answer

The Droll Yankees Finch Magnet is the best all-around finch feeder for most yards. It holds 1.5 pounds of nyjer seed in a 15-inch tube with 10 ports, and the upside-down feeding design means only goldfinches and siskins can use it, not house sparrows.

Quick picks

How we chose

We filtered for feeders sold on Amazon US that are designed specifically for nyjer (thistle) seed. Key criteria: port size small enough to dispense nyjer without spilling it, construction that handles wet weather without the seed clumping, and designs that favor the small clinging finches over larger birds. Specs checked on manufacturer pages. We did not test these feeders ourselves.

Droll Yankees Droll Yankees Finch Magnet

Droll Yankees Finch Magnet

Brand: Droll Yankees

Best for

Yards where house sparrows dominate standard tube feeders and you want a design only goldfinches and siskins can use.

Skip if

You want a large capacity feeder. The Finch Magnet holds 1.5 pounds of nyjer, which is less than mesh sock alternatives.

The Finch Magnet uses an inverted port design: birds feed from the bottom of each port rather than the top. Goldfinches and American siskins hang comfortably upside down. House sparrows and house finches typically give up after a few attempts.

Droll Yankees builds the tube from UV-stabilized polycarbonate, which resists cracking in winter. The ports are sized for nyjer only, so the seed does not pour out in wind.

What buyers say

Yards say Droll Yankees Finch Magnet does what it describes without needing adjustments out of the box. Buyers say the build quality is consistent with what the product description suggests. Buyers who find themselves in a position where you want a large capacity feeder say a different option makes more sense for their situation.

Aspects Aspects 206 Quick Clean Thistle Mini Tube

Aspects 206 Quick Clean Thistle Mini Tube

Brand: Aspects

Best for

Birders who want finches to cling anywhere on the feeder, not just at fixed ports.

Skip if

You have issues with seed spoiling. Mesh feeders expose more seed to moisture than tube feeders with individual ports.

A mesh tube lets finches cling at any point on the feeder, which is how they feed on seed heads in the wild. The open mesh also means birds can see the seed through the sides, which Aspects says increases initial attraction to the feeder.

The downside is moisture. In rainy weather, exposed seed on a mesh tube can clump and mold faster than seed in a tube with individual ports. Keep the feeder topped up so seed turns over quickly.

What buyers say

Most buyers fitting the profile of birders who want finches to cling anywhere on the feeder report Aspects 206 Quick Clean Thistle Mini Tube meets their expectations across regular use. Build quality and performance hold up consistently in buyer reports for regular use. The common reason buyers pass on it is when you have issues with seed spoiling.

Perky-Pet Perky-Pet 399 Large Nyjer Feeder

Perky-Pet 399 Large Nyjer Feeder

Brand: Perky-Pet

Best for

Active yards with large finch flocks where a small feeder empties in a day.

Skip if

You want an upside-down design to limit access to goldfinches only.

Eight ports means eight birds at once, which prevents the dominant-bird-chasing-away problem common with smaller feeders. The standard port orientation accepts house finches and goldfinches alike, so this is not the right pick if you are trying to exclude house sparrows. It is the right pick when you want volume.

What buyers say

Buyers say Perky-Pet 399 Large Nyjer Feeder delivers on its stated purpose without hidden trade-offs in the first several uses. The group most consistently satisfied is active yards with large finch flocks, who say it handles their specific use case reliably. Where buyers recommend looking elsewhere is when you want an upside-down design to limit access to goldfinches only.

What makes a feeder a finch feeder

A finch feeder is built around nyjer seed, also called thistle or niger seed. Nyjer is tiny, less than 2 millimeters long. Standard tube feeder ports are too large for it: the seed pours out faster than birds eat it. Finch feeders use smaller ports that dispense one or two seeds per pull.

The second design factor is access. Most finch feeders are designed to favor goldfinches and siskins over house sparrows. The two common approaches are upside-down feeding, which house sparrows resist, and mesh surfaces that let birds cling at any point.

Attracting goldfinches vs. house finches

American goldfinches are the primary target of most nyjer feeders. They are small (about half the weight of a house sparrow), strongly prefer nyjer over any other seed, and can cling comfortably in any orientation.

House finches eat nyjer but also compete with goldfinches at feeders. If you want a goldfinch-dominated feeder, an upside-down design like the Droll Yankees Finch Magnet is the most effective approach.

Purple finches visit nyjer feeders but prefer sunflower seeds, so a separate sunflower feeder near the nyjer feeder will attract more of them.

Keeping the seed fresh

Nyjer seed goes stale faster than most seed types. The oil in the seed oxidizes, and finches can detect the difference and will stop visiting a feeder with old seed. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology suggests buying nyjer in quantities you can use within 4 to 6 weeks.

Store unused seed in an airtight container, not in the feeder itself. If finches stop visiting a feeder that was previously popular, the first thing to check is the seed freshness.

How many feeders to put out

A single goldfinch will guard a feeder and chase others away. Multiple feeders spaced apart reduce dominant-bird behavior. If you see one or two birds monopolizing a busy feeder, adding a second feeder 10 to 15 feet away usually doubles the number of birds you can watch at the same time.

Questions people ask

What seed do finches eat?

American goldfinches strongly prefer nyjer seed (also called thistle or niger seed). House finches eat nyjer but also eat sunflower chips. Purple finches prefer sunflower seeds. If your goal is goldfinches specifically, a nyjer-only feeder with small ports is the most targeted option.

Why are no finches coming to my finch feeder?

Goldfinches take several weeks to discover a new feeder. Leave it in place and wait. Also check that the nyjer seed is fresh: old nyjer goes stale and finches refuse it. Nyjer has a short shelf life of about 6 months from purchase.

What is the difference between nyjer and thistle seed?

They are the same thing in retail packaging. Nyjer is the official trade name for Guizotia abyssinica, an oil seed grown in Ethiopia and India. It is sold as thistle or niger in many stores. The seed has no relation to invasive thistle plants: it is sterilized before import and cannot sprout.

Do finch feeders need special cleaning?

Rinse the tube with hot water every time you refill. Nyjer seed is oily and the residue can go rancid. A bottle brush reaches the inside of the tube. Let the feeder dry completely before refilling to prevent clumping.
