What is cold throw vs hot throw in a scented candle?

Cold throw is the fragrance a candle releases when unlit, at room temperature. Hot throw is the fragrance released during active burning. Both matter for different use cases. Cold throw is most noticeable when a candle is stored in a closed room, used as a decorative object without burning or displayed on a shelf. Strong cold throw candles scent a room without needing to be lit. Hot throw is the fragrance released when the wax heats and the fragrance oil vaporizes into the room air during burning. Most candle buyers care primarily about hot throw because they buy candles to burn. The two are related but not identical: a candle with excellent cold throw may have moderate hot throw if the fragrance oil burns off quickly at temperature, and vice versa. How do I store scented candles to preserve their fragrance?

Scented candle fragrance degrades from three sources: heat, light and air exposure.
