Best squirrel baffles for bird feeders: pole and hanging designs that work

A squirrel baffle is the only reliable long-term fix. Here are the designs that block most squirrel tactics.

By Pickspry EditorialUpdated 3 picks

The short answer

A 15-inch diameter wrap-around pole baffle mounted 4 to 5 feet off the ground blocks most squirrels when the feeder is also at least 10 feet from any tree branch, fence or structure they can jump from. The Woodlink Wrap Around Squirrel Baffle is the most commonly recommended model for standard 1-inch poles.

Quick picks

How we chose

We looked at baffles sold on Amazon US, checked diameter and pole fit dimensions on manufacturer pages, and kept only designs with clear mounting instructions. A baffle only works if it is sized correctly for the pole and placed at the right height. We focused on that dimension, not aesthetics. We did not test these baffles ourselves.

Best torpedo baffle
Audubon Audubon Torpedo Steel Squirrel Baffle

Audubon Torpedo Steel Squirrel Baffle

Brand: Audubon

Best for

Poles where a cone-style baffle has already been defeated, and you want a longer baffle that blocks climbing from a greater range of positions.

Skip if

Budget is the priority. The torpedo style is more expensive than a basic cone baffle.

The torpedo baffle is a cylinder rather than a cone, and the length is the key: 18 inches of smooth, ungrippable surface is too long for most squirrels to climb past. They can reach the base but cannot scale the outside or bypass the cylinder to continue up.

The cylinder design also works against squirrels that try to hang from the feeder and swing over to the pole from above, which is a limitation of cone baffles that only block climbing from below.

What buyers say

Most buyers fitting the profile of poles report Audubon Torpedo Steel Squirrel Baffle meets their expectations across regular use. Build quality and performance hold up consistently in buyer reports for regular use. The common reason buyers pass on it is when budget is the priority.

Best hanging dome baffle
Droll Yankees Droll Yankees Dome Squirrel Guard

Droll Yankees Dome Squirrel Guard

Brand: Droll Yankees

Best for

Hanging feeders on a wire or chain where a pole baffle is not applicable.

Skip if

Your feeder is on a pole. Dome baffles are designed for hanging feeders only.

A dome baffle mounts above the hanging feeder, creating a smooth dome that squirrels landing from above cannot hold onto. They slide off. It also acts as a rain shield for the feeder below.

Droll Yankees makes this from UV-stabilized polycarbonate, which is lighter than metal domes and handles sun and cold without cracking. The dome diameter is 18 inches, which is large enough to cover most standard tube and hopper feeders below it.

What buyers say

Buyers say Droll Yankees Dome Squirrel Guard delivers on its stated purpose without hidden trade-offs in the first several uses. The group most consistently satisfied is hanging feeders on a wire or chain, who say it handles their specific use case reliably. Where buyers recommend looking elsewhere is when your feeder is on a pole.

How squirrel baffles work

A baffle does not repel squirrels with a scent or a coating. It is a physical obstacle: a surface too wide to reach around, too smooth to grip, or too long to climb past. The two formats cover two attack routes.

Pole baffles mount on the pole below the feeder. A squirrel climbing the pole hits the baffle and cannot get traction on the smooth exterior to continue upward.

Dome baffles mount above a hanging feeder. A squirrel that lands on or reaches the dome slides off because the smooth, curved surface provides no grip.

Neither works if the squirrel has a better route available. A nearby tree branch, fence or roof that is within jumping distance renders the baffle irrelevant: the squirrel simply bypasses the pole entirely.

The placement rules that matter

Cornell Lab of Ornithology guidelines are specific:

  • At least 5 feet off the ground
  • At least 10 feet horizontally from any tree, fence, roof or structure

Both conditions must be met. A baffle on a 5-foot pole next to a fence 8 feet away will not work. A feeder 15 feet from the nearest tree on a 3-foot pole will not work either.

If your yard does not have a location that meets both conditions, consider a weight-sensitive feeder like the Brome Squirrel Buster series instead of relying on a baffle alone.

Sizing matters

The 15-inch diameter of the Woodlink NATBAF15 is the minimum practical size. A squirrel sitting on the pole at the base of a smaller baffle can often reach up and over the edge to grip the rim. At 15 inches, the edge is beyond their reach.

For torpedo-style baffles, the length is what matters. An 18-inch cylinder provides more deterrent than a 12-inch one because it takes more climbing distance to defeat.

Installing a pole baffle

  1. Measure your pole diameter to confirm the baffle fits (most wrap-around baffles fit 0.75 to 1.5 inches).
  2. Remove the feeder from the pole.
  3. Wrap the baffle around the pole and secure the clasp.
  4. Position the baffle at 4 to 5 feet off the ground.
  5. Rehang the feeder.

A wrap-around design does not require threading anything over the top of the pole, which simplifies installation on poles that are already in the ground.

Questions people ask

Does a squirrel baffle always work?

A baffle works when installed correctly and when the feeder location removes the squirrel's ability to jump from a nearby tree, fence or structure. Cornell Lab of Ornithology guidelines recommend at least 10 feet of horizontal clearance from any jumping point and at least 5 feet of height from the ground. Violating either rule defeats any baffle.

How high should I mount a pole baffle?

Mount the baffle 4 to 5 feet off the ground. Lower than 4 feet and squirrels can reach over or around it from the ground. Higher than 5 feet and the feeder itself may be within jumping range from the ground.

Can squirrels jump over a baffle from a branch?

Yes, if the branch is close enough. A squirrel can jump horizontally up to 10 feet from a standing position. Any branch, fence, roof or structure within 10 feet of the feeder is a launching point. The baffle only blocks climbing from the pole below.

What is the difference between a pole baffle and a dome baffle?

A pole baffle mounts on the pole below the feeder and blocks squirrels climbing up. A dome baffle mounts above a hanging feeder and blocks squirrels that land from above. Use a pole baffle for pole-mounted feeders and a dome baffle for hanging feeders.
