Best heater for a small betta tank (2.5 to 5 gallons)

Most heaters are sized for bigger tanks. These three are rated for small ones, with the numbers to prove the fit.

By Pickspry EditorialUpdated 3 picks

The short answer

Choose a heater rated for your tank's size and keep a thermometer in the water. The Fluval P25 is the easiest pick: it is preset to hold 76 to 78°F, rated for tanks up to 6 US gallons, and has nothing to adjust. PetMD gives 76 to 81°F as the right range for a betta.

Quick picks

How we chose

We started with the numbers in PetMD's vet reviewed betta care sheet: water between 76 and 81°F, a tank of at least 2.5 gallons, and a heater of about 3 to 5 watts per gallon. We then looked for heaters on Amazon US that their makers rate for tanks in the 2.5 to 5 gallon range and checked each rating against the maker's page or listing.

Two heaters we expected to include, the Eheim Jager 25 W and the Cobalt Neo-Therm 25 W, were not listed for sale on Amazon US when we checked, so they are not here. We have not tested these heaters ourselves.

Fluval Fluval P25 Submersible Heater

Fluval P25 Submersible Heater

Brand: Fluval

Best for

Anyone who wants to set up the tank once and never touch a dial. The preset sits inside the betta range.

Skip if

You want to run the tank at 80°F or above. The P25 holds 76 to 78°F and cannot be changed.

The P25 is the heater to buy if you would rather not think about heaters. Fluval presets it to hold 76 to 78°F, which sits inside PetMD's 76 to 81°F range for bettas, and rates it for tanks up to 6 US gallons. There is no dial to knock out of place and no setting to get wrong.

It is fully submersible, the housing is shatterproof polymer rather than glass, and an LED lights while it is heating, so a glance tells you it is working. On a 5 gallon tank, 25 watts is right at the top of PetMD's 3 to 5 watts per gallon. On a 2.5 gallon tank it is more power than that rule suggests. The built-in thermostat still holds the preset, but it is one more reason to keep a thermometer in the tank.

What buyers say

Anyone who wants to set up the tank once and never touch a dial. The preset say Fluval P25 Submersible Heater does what it describes without needing adjustments out of the box. Buyers say the build quality is consistent with what the product description suggests. Buyers who find themselves in a position where you want to run the tank at 80°F or above say a different option makes more sense for their situation.

hygger 10 W Small Aquarium Heater with external controller

Brand: hygger

Best for

Keepers who want to set an exact temperature and read the water temperature without a separate thermometer.

Skip if

You want a heater with no glass in it. The heating tube is quartz glass, though hygger lists it at 2 mm thick.

At 4.1 inches long, this is the shortest heater here, small enough to hide behind a plant in a 2.5 gallon tank. The controls sit on a box outside the water with an LED display that shows the water temperature, so you set it and read it without getting your hands wet. The range runs from 59 to 93°F.

The listing covers several wattages on one page, so pick carefully. For a tank of 5 gallons or less, choose the 10 W version. By PetMD's 3 to 5 watts per gallon, 10 W suits tanks of about 2 to 3 gallons and runs light at 5 gallons, which matters most in a cold room. hygger says the heater stops heating if the water passes 95°F or drops below the minimum line, and the controller shows an error code when that happens.

What buyers say

Most buyers fitting the profile of keepers who want to set an exact temperature and read the water temperature report hygger 10 W Small Aquarium Heater with external controller meets their expectations across regular use. Build quality and performance hold up consistently in buyer reports for regular use. The common reason buyers pass on it is when you want a heater with no glass in it.

Aqueon Aqueon Mini Heater 10 W

Aqueon Mini Heater 10 W

Brand: Aqueon

Best for

Desktop tanks where space is tight and you want a small, flat heater with nothing to set.

Skip if

You need to know the exact temperature it holds. The listing gives no set point.

Aqueon's mini heater is a flat, shatterproof 10 W unit made for desktop tanks from 2.5 to 5 gallons. At about 3.4 inches long it tucks in almost anywhere, it can sit vertically or horizontally, and it works in glass or acrylic tanks. It has a thermal safety shut-off.

What the listing does not give is the temperature it holds, and there is no dial. That does not make it a bad heater, but it does make a thermometer essential. Watch the reading for the first few days, before the betta goes in if you can.

What buyers say

Buyers say Aqueon Mini Heater 10 W delivers on its stated purpose without hidden trade-offs in the first several uses. The group most consistently satisfied is desktop tanks, who say it handles their specific use case reliably. Where buyers recommend looking elsewhere is when you need to know the exact temperature it holds.

Specs from Amazon listing, Aqueon Mini Heater 10 Watts

How much heater a small betta tank needs

PetMD suggests about 3 to 5 watts per gallon. For small tanks that works out like this:

Tank size At 3 W per gallon At 5 W per gallon
2.5 gallons 7.5 W 12.5 W
3 gallons 9 W 15 W
5 gallons 15 W 25 W

Lean toward the higher number if the tank sits in a cool room or near a window in winter. The heater has to make up the gap between room temperature and the 76 to 81°F a betta needs, and a bigger gap takes more power.

Preset or adjustable

A preset heater like the Fluval P25 holds one temperature and cannot be changed. That is a strength for most keepers: there is nothing to set wrong, and its 76 to 78°F sits inside the betta range.

An adjustable heater lets you choose the number. That helps if you want the tank toward the warmer end of the range, or if you keep other species later. The trade off is one more thing to check, and a dial that can be bumped.

Either way, keep a separate thermometer in the tank. A heater's label tells you what it is meant to hold. A thermometer tells you what the water is actually doing.

What we left out

  • Tetra HT10. A well known preset heater, but it is 50 W and Tetra rates it for tanks from 2 to 10 gallons. On a 3 gallon tank that is roughly 17 watts per gallon, far above PetMD's rule of thumb. It makes more sense in a 10 gallon tank.
  • Eheim Jager 25 W and Cobalt Neo-Therm 25 W. Both are 25 W heaters made for small tanks, but neither was listed for sale on Amazon US when we checked. We will add them if that changes.

Questions people ask

Do betta fish need a heater?

Yes. PetMD's care sheet says to provide a heater even if your home usually sits in the safe range, because temperature swings are very stressful for fish. Small tanks swing faster than large ones.

What temperature should a betta tank be?

PetMD gives 76 to 81°F, and notes that many bettas do best toward the warmer end. It also says stability matters more than the exact number, so a steady 78°F beats a tank that drifts between 74 and 82°F.

Is a 25 watt heater too much for a 2.5 gallon tank?

It is more than the 3 to 5 watts per gallon rule suggests, which works out to about 7.5 to 12.5 watts for 2.5 gallons. A heater with a working thermostat switches off at its set point, so extra wattage mostly means the water warms faster. A thermometer confirms that it is holding steady.

Where should the heater go in a small tank?

Somewhere the filter moves water past it, so the warmth spreads instead of pooling in one corner. Keep it fully under water, and unplug it before any water change that brings the level down near it.
